If you’re using Google Apps at DreamHost and running into problems creating a custom CNAME mail record for mail.yourdomain.com you’re not alone. When you host a domain at DreamHost a ‘mail’ record is created by default, so when you try and add one to point to ghs.google.com you’ll get an error message. Unfortunately there is no way to properly resolve this without contacting the DreamHost support team. Fortunately they are fully aware of this issue and are able to correct it very quickly. I e-mailed their support team at 11:45 pm pacific time this evening and received a response within 10 minutes and the issue had been resolved.

If you run into this issue here is the solution they provided on the DreamHost wiki:

“Contact support and ask them to place a special parameter on your account that disables the automatic generation of these MX records so you can add your CNAME. DNS must then be flushed (which should be done when the special parameter is added to your account). This will remove all MX records for mail.yourdomain.com (the other ones for yourdomain.com stay) and then you can add your CNAME record.”

Example e-mail:

I need to add a CNAME for mail.<mydomain>.com but I am unable to because
MX records are automatically generated by your system for the mail
sub-domain even when I use custom MX records. I have heard you can
add a special parameter to remove these MX Records from my domain
so I would ask that you please do this for me.
Thanks!
